Working Group
The Access and Justice group is working in conjunction with the WNC Food Justice Planning Initiative (FJPI) and WNC Food Waste Solutions to improve access to food waste reduction strategies, specifically within low wealth and rural communities.
Ongoing Effort
- Expand food waste reduction initiatives to rural areas
- Liability protection information and education for food donations
- Tax incentives for food donations
- Education about date labeling
- Food safety for food donations
- Food waste reduction in K-12 schools
- Organic waste bans and waste recycling laws
- Food scraps to livestock programs across WNC
What We’re Working on Now
- Working in conjunction with the WNC Food Justice Planning Initiative to conduct outreach in rural and low wealth communities.
- Conduct assessments of food waste reduction strategies already in place to identify gaps
- Build trusting relationships with collaborators across communities and organizations in WNC
- Ensure our Equity Guidelines are being used in our work and decision making processes.
Our Long-Term Goals
- Infrastructure is in place for on-going community led program delivery and education to eliminate food waste in WNC.
- Equitable messaging is being used to Improve access to food waste reduction strategies specifically within low wealth and rural communities.
